Dear Pulse magazine,
I am writing to you with regard to your Dr Copperfield Column on 22.10.10 entitled ‘Feeling Down on the Farm’.
As a mental health services user I found the column to be insulting and distasteful. The language used was offensive to people with a mental illness. I realise that the column is meant to be humourous and tongue in cheek, but I feel that as a representative of GPs, you have a responsibility to both them and their patients.
Making jokes about suicide pacts, eating disorders and terming those with mental health problems ‘heartsinks’ is appalling, and the fact that a respected magazine would deem this acceptable for publication is extremely worrying. Any patient reading this article would find it disturbing that their Doctor regards them in such negative terms.
I believe that you have made an error in publishing this article, and I hope you recognise how inappropriate it is.
I look forward to your response.
